Growing curry leaf plants (Murraya koenigii) from seeds can be a bit tricky, but it’s absolutely possible with the right method. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to grow curry leaf plants from seeds:
🌱 WHAT YOU NEED:
Fresh curry leaf seeds (from ripe, black berries)
Small pots or seed trays
Seed starting mix (light and well-draining)
Plastic wrap or a humidity dome
Spray bottle for misting
Warm, sunny location or a heat mat
🔁 STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE:
1. Obtain Fresh Seeds
Use fresh, ripe black berries from a curry leaf plant. The seeds inside must be fresh, as they lose viability quickly.
Remove the pulp from the berry completely and wash the seed.
2. Prepare the Seeds
Soak the cleaned seeds in warm water overnight to soften the outer coating and speed up germination.
3. Plant the Seeds
Fill a seed tray or small pots with moist, well-draining seed starting mix.
Plant the seed about ½ inch (1–1.5 cm) deep in the soil.
Gently firm the soil and mist it lightly with water.
4. Create a Warm, Humid Environment
Cover the pot with plastic wrap or place it in a mini greenhouse to keep the humidity high.
Keep the temperature around 25–30°C (77–86°F). A heat mat helps if you’re in a cooler climate.
5. Watering & Light
Keep the soil consistently moist, but not soggy.
Place the pot in a bright, warm spot, but out of direct sunlight at first.
Once seedlings emerge, gradually move them to more light.
6. Germination Time
Be patient. Germination can take 2–4 weeks, sometimes longer depending on conditions.
7. Transplanting
Once the seedlings are 4–6 inches tall and have several sets of leaves, you can transplant them into larger pots.
Use a well-draining potting mix with compost.
⚠️ TIPS FOR SUCCESS:
Do not let the soil dry out completely. It will kill the seedling.
Avoid overwatering. This can cause the seed to rot.
Don’t use dried seeds from store-bought curry leaves — they usually won’t germinate.
Growing from cuttings is easier, but growing from seed gives you a stronger root system long-term.
