Red rajma is a protein-rich pulse crop widely grown in hilly and cool regions, and also cultivated successfully in plains during suitable seasons. It is ideal for organic farming and improves soil fertility.

🌤️ 1. Climate Requirement
Grows best in cool to moderate climate
Ideal temperature: 15–25°C
High heat causes poor flowering
Sensitive to frost at early stage
Best sowing time (India):
Hills: March – April
Plains (Rabi): October – November
Plains (Summer, with irrigation): January – February

🌾 2. Soil Requirement
Best soil: Well-drained loam or sandy loam
Soil should be fertile and loose
Soil pH: 6.0 – 7.5
Before sowing:
Mix well-rotted cow dung compost or FYM
Add neem cake to prevent soil pests
❌ Avoid waterlogged and heavy clay soil

🌱 3. Seed Sowing
✅ Field Preparation
Plough field 2–3 times
Make soil fine and level
✅ Sowing Method
Seed rate: 25–30 kg per acre
Seed depth: 4–5 cm
Row spacing: 45 cm
Plant spacing: 10–15 cm
Germination: 6–8 days

💧 4. Water Management
Give light irrigation after sowing
Water every 7–10 days
Critical stages:
Flowering
Pod formation
❌ Avoid excess irrigation (causes root rot)

🌿 5. Organic Nutrient Management
Apply vermicompost or compost before sowing
Spray jeevamrit or compost tea every 20–25 days
Rajma needs low nitrogen (it fixes its own nitrogen)

✂️ 6. Crop Management
First weeding at 20–25 days
Second weeding at 35–40 days
Some varieties may need light staking to avoid lodging

🐛 7. Pest & Disease Control (Organic)
Aphids & whiteflies: Neem oil spray (5 ml per litre water)
Pod borer: Neem seed kernel extract (NSKE)
Rust & leaf spot: Spray diluted buttermilk (1:10)
Remove infected plants immediately

🌾 8. Harvesting
Crop matures in 90–110 days
Harvest when:
Pods turn brown and dry
Seeds become hard
Harvest in dry weather
Dry pods properly before storage

6–10 quintals per acre
