💚 How to Grow Organic & Desi Green Amaranth (Chaulai Saag)
☀️ 1. Climate & Season
Green amaranth loves warm and humid climate (25–35°C).
Sowing Time in India:
North India: February–October
South India: Almost year-round (except very cold months)
Fast-growing crop — ready in 25–40 days for leaves, 60–70 days for grain.
—
🌾 2. Soil Preparation (Organic Way)
Grows best in loamy or sandy-loam soil, rich in organic matter.
pH: 6.0–7.5
Before sowing, mix well:
Compost or cow dung (2–3 kg per sq.m.)
Neem cake powder (100 g per sq.m.) for pest control
Amaranth grows even in poor soil — but organic matter improves yield & taste.
—
🌱 3. Methods of Growing (All Options)
(a) Line Sowing (Best for Regular Use)
Make small furrows 30 cm apart.
Sow seeds thinly and shallow (0.5 cm deep).
Cover lightly with fine soil or compost and water gently.
(b) Broadcasting (For Leafy Harvest)
Sprinkle seeds evenly on soil surface.
Lightly rake and cover with thin layer of compost.
Suitable for small kitchen gardens.
(c) Pot / Container Growing
Use 8–10 inch deep pots or grow bags.
Mix soil + compost (1:1).
Sow seeds thinly and keep in full sunlight.
—
💧 4. Watering
Keep soil moist but not waterlogged.
Water daily in summer or every 2–3 days in mild weather.
Avoid overhead watering once plants are 10–15 cm tall — it can bend soft stems.
—
🌿 5. Organic Feeding
Every 10–15 days apply:
Cow dung slurry or vermicompost tea
Jeevamrut or Panchagavya (natural growth booster)
Don’t over-fertilize — tender leaves are best from moderate feeding.
—
🐛 6. Pest & Disease Control (Organic)
Common issues: Leaf-eating caterpillars, aphids, and whiteflies.
✅ Remedies:
Neem oil spray (5 ml per liter of water) every 7–10 days.
Garlic–chili spray for caterpillars.
Keep bed weed-free and rotate crops every season.
—
🌸 7. Harvesting
For leaves: Start plucking after 25–30 days (when plants are 10–15 cm tall).
For continuous harvest, cut top 1/3 of the plant — new shoots regrow quickly.
For seeds: Let plants grow 60–70 days, then dry the seed heads.
—
🌼 8. Extra Tips
Thin seedlings early (keep spacing 10–15 cm).
Mulch with straw or dry leaves to retain moisture.
Companion crops: Okra, Brinjal, Chili, Coriander.
Amaranth improves soil fertility — good for crop rotation.
