🥬 How to Grow Organic & Desi Bok Choy (Pak Choi)
☀️ 1. Climate & Season
Grows best in cool weather (15–25°C).
Ideal sowing time in India:
North India: September–February
South India: October–March
Can be grown in pots, beds, or open fields.
—
🌾 2. Soil Preparation (Organic Way)
Bok Choy prefers loamy, well-drained, and fertile soil.
Soil pH: 6.0–7.5
Mix thoroughly:
2 parts cow dung manure or compost
1 part garden soil
A handful of neem cake powder (for pest control)
> 💡 Tip: Avoid heavy clay soil — roots won’t develop properly.
—
🌱 3. Growing Methods
(a) Direct Sowing (Furrow or Line Method)
Make furrows (rows) about 1 foot apart.
Sow seeds ½ inch deep and cover lightly with soil.
Keep 6–8 inches spacing between plants.
Water gently after sowing.
(b) Seedling Transplant Method
1. Sow seeds in seed trays or small pots.
2. Keep moist until seedlings are 3–4 inches tall (about 3 weeks).
3. Transplant into beds or larger pots.
4. Water immediately after transplanting.
(c) Pot or Container Method
Use 8–10 inch deep pots.
Fill with compost-rich organic soil.
Sow 3–4 seeds per pot, then thin to 1–2 healthy plants.
(d) Raised Bed Method
Make 3–4 ft wide raised beds with organic manure mixed in.
Great for commercial or home terrace gardens — helps in drainage and root growth.
—
💧 4. Watering
Keep the soil consistently moist — Bok Choy needs regular water.
Water early morning or evening.
Avoid waterlogging to prevent root rot.
—
🌿 5. Organic Feeding
Every 10–15 days, apply:
Cow dung slurry
Vermicompost tea
Jeevamrut or Panchagavya spray
This gives glossy green leaves and fast growth.
—
🐛 6. Pest & Disease Control
Common issues:
Aphids, flea beetles, and caterpillars.
✅ Organic Remedies:
Neem oil spray (5ml per liter) weekly.
Garlic–chili spray for caterpillars.
Remove yellow or damaged leaves quickly.
—
🌼 7. Harvesting
Ready to harvest in 35–45 days after sowing.
Harvest outer leaves first (cut-and-come-again method) or pull the full plant.
Best harvested early morning for freshness.
—
🌸 8. Extra Tips
Mulch with dry leaves or straw to save water.
Rotate crops — don’t grow after other cabbage-family plants.
Store harvested Bok Choy in a cool, moist cloth to stay fresh longer.
