๐ Oyster Mushroom Growing Guide
๐น Common name โ Oyster Mushroom
๐น Scientific name โ Pleurotus spp.
๐น Type โ Edible cultivated mushroom ๐
๐น Special โ Easier to cultivate than button mushroom and can be grown on agricultural waste such as wheat straw.
๐ค๏ธ Climate & Growing Time ๐ฎ๐ณ
๐ Punjab
๐ฑ Best season: October โ March
For commercial production, it can be grown almost year-round if temperature and humidity are controlled.
๐ก๏ธ Ideal fruiting temperature: generally 15โ25ยฐC, depending on the oyster species/strain.
๐ฑ Seed / Spawn
โ ๏ธ Oyster mushroom is not grown from seeds.
โ Use good-quality oyster mushroom spawn.
๐พ Suitable substrates
โ Wheat straw
โ Paddy straw
โ Maize stalks
โ Other suitable clean agricultural residues
For Punjab, wheat straw is an excellent and easily available substrate.
๐งโ๐พ Basic Growing Process
1๏ธโฃ Prepare the Straw
โ Cut straw into approximately 2โ5 cm pieces.
โ Soak thoroughly in clean water.
โ Pasteurize with hot water/steam according to the cultivation method.
โ๏ธ The substrate should be moist but not dripping wet.
2๏ธโฃ Add Spawn ๐
โ Mix oyster mushroom spawn evenly through the cooled, pasteurized straw.
โ Fill into clean polypropylene bags or suitable growing containers.
3๏ธโฃ Spawn Running ๐ฑ
Keep the bags in a clean, dark or low-light area.
๐ก๏ธ Generally around 20โ25ยฐC, depending on the strain.
โณ Usually takes around 15โ25 days for the mycelium to colonize the substrate.
The bag should gradually become covered with white mushroom mycelium.
4๏ธโฃ Fruiting ๐
Once the substrate is completely colonized:
โ Make appropriate openings/slits in the bags.
โ Move them to a humid fruiting area.
๐ง Maintain approximately 80โ90% humidity.
๐ฌ๏ธ Provide fresh air exchange.
๐ค๏ธ Give diffused/indirect light; complete darkness is not required for fruiting.
๐ Pinning & Harvesting
Small mushroom pins usually appear after the fruiting conditions are established.
โณ Depending on strain and conditions, mushrooms can become harvestable within roughly 5โ10 days after pinning.
โ๏ธ Harvest
Harvest when the caps are well developed but the edges are still slightly curled.
โ Twist or cut the whole cluster cleanly.
โ๏ธ Several flushes can be obtained from a healthy substrate bag.
๐ง Important Watering Rule
โ Don’t pour water directly onto developing mushrooms.
Instead:
โ Maintain humidity by misting the room/walls/floor or using a suitable humidification system.
โ๏ธ Good ventilation is essential because excessive COโ can cause long stems and small caps.
๐ฟ Organic Mushroom Production
For a low-chemical approach:
โ๏ธ Use clean agricultural straw
โ๏ธ Properly pasteurize the substrate
โ๏ธ Use healthy spawn
โ๏ธ Maintain strict hygiene
โ๏ธ Remove contaminated bags immediately
โ ๏ธ Don’t use visibly mouldy or chemically contaminated straw.
โณ Crop Duration
Generally:
โ First harvest: around 20โ30 days after spawning, depending on strain and conditions.
โ Total production: commonly around 6โ10 weeks, with multiple flushes.
โญ For a beginner:
Oyster mushroom is generally the easier mushroom to start with.
