How To Sow –

Prepare the soil well to make it loose, friable, and moisture-retentive. Use 200–250 g of seed per acre for transplanting, or 325 g for direct sowing. For early varieties, maintain a spacing of 45×45 cm; for late maturing ones, use 67.5×45 cm. Direct sowing on ridges spaced 60 cm apart with 15–20 cm plant spacing helps in getting the harvest about two weeks earlier than with transplanting.

After transplanting, irrigate immediately, followed by irrigation every 10–15 days depending on soil moisture. A total of 8–12 irrigations may be required.

• Climate & Soil: Grows best in cool, moist climates and tolerates frost well, even during head formation. Quality decreases in dry climates. Prefers sandy loam for early crop and clay or silt loam for high yields.
