Description

🌿 How to Grow Organic & Desi Kasuri Methi (Fenugreek)

☀️ 1. Climate & Season

Kasuri methi grows best in cool and dry climate (15–25°C).

Sowing Time in India:

North India: October to February

South India: August to February

Avoid very hot or rainy periods — leaves become bitter.

🌾 2. Soil Preparation (Organic Way)

Methi grows in loamy, well-drained soil rich in organic matter.

Soil pH: 6.0–7.0

Mix before sowing:

2–3 kg compost or cow dung manure per sq.m.

A handful of neem cake powder (to prevent soil pests)

> 💡 Well-prepared organic soil improves aroma and taste of Kasuri methi.

🌱 3. Sowing Methods

(a) Line Sowing (Best for Regular Harvest)

Make furrows 20–25 cm apart.

Sow seeds 1–2 cm deep in moist soil.

Cover lightly with fine soil or compost and water gently.

(b) Broadcasting (For Leafy Harvest)

Sprinkle seeds evenly over the bed.

Lightly rake and cover with a thin layer of compost.

Ideal for small kitchen gardens.

(c) Pot / Container Method

Use 8–10 inch deep containers with good drainage.

Fill with soil + compost (1:1) and sow seeds densely.

Place in full sun or light shade.

💧 4. Watering

Keep soil moist but not waterlogged.

Water every 2–3 days in winter, or daily in warm areas.

Reduce watering before harvesting to keep leaves flavorful.

🌿 5. Organic Feeding

After 15–20 days, apply:

Cow dung slurry or vermicompost tea

Jeevamrut spray every 2 weeks

Avoid excess fertilizer — mild organic feeding enhances aroma.

🐛 6. Organic Pest & Disease Control

Common issues: Aphids and powdery mildew.

✅ Natural Remedies:

Neem oil spray (5 ml per liter of water) weekly.

Use garlic-chili spray for aphids.

Ensure good air flow — avoid water stagnation.

🌼 7. Harvesting

First harvest: 25–30 days after sowing (when plants are 6–8 inches tall).

Cut upper leaves or whole plant, leaving roots to regrow for next cutting.

For Kasuri methi (dry leaves):

Harvest mature leaves, wash, dry in shade, and store in airtight jar.

🌸 8. Extra Tips

Sunlight: At least 4–6 hours daily.

Rotate crop every season — avoid planting methi repeatedly on same bed.

Companion plants: Coriander, spinach, carrot, and garlic (help pest control).
