🌱 How to Grow Organic & Desi Green Chickpeas (Hara Chana)

☀️ 1. Climate & Season

Best in cool, dry weather (20–30°C).

Sowing time (India):

North India → October–November

South India → November–December

🌾 2. Soil Preparation (Organic Way)

Use loamy or clay loam soil, pH 6.0–8.0.

Mix:

Cow dung manure or compost

Vermicompost

Neem cake (for soil pests)

Avoid chemical fertilizers.

🚜 3. Methods of Growing

(a) Furrow Method (नाली विधि)

Make furrows 1 ft apart, sow seeds 1–2 inches deep.

Saves water, prevents fungal diseases, gives even growth.

(b) Line Sowing (Drill Method)

Sow in straight lines, 8–10 inches apart.

Easy for intercultural operations and harvesting.

(c) Broadcasting (छिटक विधि)

Scatter seeds evenly and cover lightly with soil.

Easy but less uniform; used in small fields.

(d) Raised Bed Method

Make raised beds (4 ft wide) with small channels between them.

Gives better drainage and higher yield in heavy soils.

(e) Pot / Grow Bag Method

Use 10–12 inch deep pots with organic soil mix.

Keep 3–4 seeds per pot, in full sunlight.

Perfect for terrace or balcony gardening.

🌱 4. Watering

Needs very little water.

1st irrigation: after 25–30 days.

2nd irrigation: during flowering or pod filling stage.

🌿 5. Organic Feeding

Every 15–20 days, apply:

Cow dung slurry

Jeevamrut / Panchagavya spray

Vermiwash for leaf spray

🐛 6. Pest & Disease Control

Use Neem oil (5 ml per liter) spray weekly.

For fungus → spray buttermilk + turmeric mix.

Avoid waterlogging to prevent root rot.

🌼 7. Harvesting

Green pods ready in 90–100 days.

For dry chana, harvest after pods turn brown.

Dry plants in shade before storage.

Intercrop with mustard or coriander for pest control.
