Description
🍆 How to Grow Organic & Desi Long Brinjal (Baigani)
☀️ 1. Climate & Season
Long brinjal grows best in warm, sunny weather (25–35°C).
It cannot tolerate frost or heavy rains.
Sowing Time in India:
North India: January–March & June–July
South India: Almost all year (avoid peak monsoon)
> 🌤️ Needs 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily for healthy fruiting.
—
🌾 2. Soil Preparation (Organic Way)
Best soil: Loamy, well-drained, and rich in organic matter.
Soil pH: 6.0–7.5
Before sowing, mix per sq.m.:
3–4 kg compost or cow dung manure
100 g neem cake powder (to keep soil pests away)
Make sure the soil is light and crumbly — brinjal roots need air.
—
🌱 3. Methods of Sowing
(a) Nursery + Transplant Method (Recommended)
1. Prepare a nursery bed with fine soil + compost.
2. Sow seeds 1 cm deep, cover lightly, and water gently.
3. Germination takes 7–10 days.
4. After 25–30 days, when seedlings are 10–12 cm tall, transplant them to the main field or pots.
5. Spacing:
Between plants: 45–60 cm
Between rows: 60–75 cm
(b) Pot / Container Growing
Use 12–15 inch deep pots or grow bags.
Fill with soil + compost (1:1) and add neem cake.
Long brinjal plants grow tall, so add bamboo sticks or wire support.
(c) Furrow Method (for Field Planting)
Make furrows 60 cm apart.
Transplant seedlings along both sides of furrow for good drainage and spacing.
—
💧 4. Watering
Keep soil consistently moist, not soggy.
Water every 2–3 days or daily in hot weather.
Avoid overhead watering to reduce fungal infection.
Mulch with dry leaves or straw to retain soil moisture.
—
🌿 5. Organic Feeding
Every 15–20 days, apply:
Cow dung slurry or vermicompost tea
Jeevamrut or Panchagavya spray for strong growth
During fruiting, add banana peel compost for natural potassium.
> 💡 Well-fed brinjal plants bear fruits for 3–4 months continuously.
—
🐛 6. Organic Pest & Disease Control
Common issues: Fruit borer, aphids, whiteflies, and leaf curl.
✅ Remedies:
Neem oil spray (5 ml per liter) weekly.
Garlic–chili spray for fruit borers.
Sticky yellow traps for whiteflies.
Keep soil aerated and don’t overwater.
Rotate crops — avoid planting after tomato or chili.
—
🌸 7. Harvesting
First harvest: 60–80 days after transplanting.
Pick fruits when they are glossy, firm, and deep purple.
Don’t let fruits overmature — they lose flavor.
Harvest every 3–4 days to encourage more fruiting.
—
🌼 8. Extra Tips
Sunlight: At least 6 hours daily.
Add compost after each harvest for new growth.
Companion plants: Marigold, coriander, and mint help repel pests.
Support tall plants with sticks to prevent bending.
