Description
🌱 How to Grow Organic & Desi Sem Fali (Indian Broad Beans)
☀️ 1. Climate & Season
Sem fali prefers a warm and mild climate (20–30°C).
Too much cold or frost can damage the crop.
Sowing Time in India:
North India: June–July (Kharif) or February–March (Rabi)
South India: Almost year-round
—
🌾 2. Soil Preparation (Organic Way)
Grows best in well-drained, loamy soil rich in organic matter.
Soil pH: 6.0–7.5
Mix before sowing:
Cow dung manure or compost – 3–4 kg per sq.m.
Neem cake – 100 g per sq.m. (to keep soil pests away)
Avoid chemical fertilizers — they reduce natural flavor and soil health.
—
🌱 3. Methods of Sowing
(a) Furrow Method (Recommended)
Make furrows 45–60 cm apart.
Sow 2–3 seeds per hole, about 2–3 cm deep.
Cover lightly with soil and water gently.
Suitable for open fields and kitchen gardens.
(b) Pit Method (for Home Gardens)
Dig small pits 45 cm apart and add compost before sowing.
Place 3–4 seeds per pit, cover with fine soil.
(c) Pot / Container Method
Use 12–15 inch deep pots or grow bags.
Mix soil + compost (1:1).
Provide a trellis or stick support for climbing varieties.
—
💧 4. Watering
Keep soil slightly moist, not soggy.
Water every 2–3 days in early growth and daily during flowering/pod formation.
Avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal disease.
—
🌿 5. Organic Feeding
After 15 days, feed with:
Vermicompost tea or cow dung slurry
Jeevamrut or Panchagavya spray every 2–3 weeks
Mulch with dry leaves or straw to conserve moisture.
—
🐛 6. Organic Pest & Disease Control
Common pests: Aphids, pod borers, and whiteflies.
✅ Control Naturally:
Spray Neem oil (5 ml per liter of water) every week.
Use buttermilk spray (chaach + water 1:4) for whiteflies.
Remove dried or infected leaves to stop disease spread.
—
🌸 7. Harvesting
Pods are ready 60–75 days after sowing.
Harvest tender, green pods regularly for best taste.
Picking on time encourages more flowering and pod formation.
—
🌼 8. Extra Tips
Provide support (bamboo sticks or net) for climbing types.
Rotate crops every year — don’t grow sem fali on the same bed continuously.
Companion plants: Coriander, spinach, amaranth, marigold (help repel pests).
